Advanced technology in the field of neonatology has resulted in an improved survival rate for all ill infants. However, follow up studies indicate that despite this decrease in mortality, some infants, especially those born preterm, and some ill full-term infants, continue to be at-risk of poor neurodevelopmental outcomes. Studies conclude that developmental care fosters the neurobehavioral and physiological organization of infants. Most neonatal care in Thailand still focuses on meeting the physiological needs of preterm or ill infants, with less attention on developmental care. This survey study aimed to compare knowledge and practice among nurses regarding developmental care of neonates before and after attending a training program on developmental care. Sixty eight nurses working in hospitals in Northern and Southern parts of Thailand, participated in this study. Subjects were obtained by purposive sampling, and statistical comparison was made by using one way repeated ANOVA and Shaffe method. The results showed that the knowledge mean scores of nurses on pretest , immediate post test, 3 month, and 6 month post test were significantly different (p<.01). The knowledge mean scores on immediate, 3 month, and 6 month post tests were significantly higher than the pretest (p<.01). The study also found that the practice mean scores of neonatal nurses on pretest, 3 month, and 6 month post test were significantly different (p<.01), but only the practice mean score on 6 month post test was significantly higher than the pretest score (p<.01). This study demonstrates that a training program on developmental care enhances both knowledge and practice regarding developmental care of neonates among nurses, and it is suggested that a training program on developmental care should be provided continuously to all neonatal nurses.
