Background: Inmates with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) experience mental health and
spiritual problems requiring a great spirituality to deal with hopelessness and depression and provide
a new meaning to their lives. Previous studies investigate spirituality of prisoners and people living
with HIV, however, limited study examines spirituality of prisoners with HIV particularly in Indonesia. This
study aimed to describe the spirituality of prisoners with HIV in Indonesia in general and the specifics
of each aspect of spirituality.
Objective: This study was a quantitative research method with a survey descriptive approach.
Methods: The subjects of this study were 81 prisoners with HIV in Jakarta, Central Java, South
Kalimantan, and West Sumatera obtained by convenience sampling technique. Data collection
used the Daily Spiritual Experience Scale (DSES) Questionnaire which was analyzed using univariate
analysis.
Results: The results of this study showed that most of the prisoners with HIV had a medium level of
spirituality. All aspects of spirituality showed that the majority of prisoners with HIV were in the high
category, but some are in the medium and low categories.
Conclusion: Religiosity should be improved to maintain spirituality of prisoners with HIV impacting on

quality of life.
