Background: According to a study published by the United Nations Department of Economic and
Social Affairs, population aging is a clear global trend of our time. The number of people aged 65 and
over globally stands at 761 million and is expected to rise to 1.6 billion by 2050. Due to the degenerative
changes in the physiological function of the elderly, their self-care ability is relatively decreased,
resulting in an increased risk of self-neglect. However, self-neglect of the elderly not only causes social
medical and economic problems, but also increases the burden of old-age care, and has become a
prominent social and public health problem in developed and developing countries around the world.
Objective: To systematically evaluate the risk factors of self-neglect in the elderly, and to provide
reference for targeted intervention to reduce the incidence of self-neglect in the elderly.
Methods: Major domestic and foreign databases such as PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, Web of
science, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, Chinese Journal full-text database, Wanfang Data
Knowledge Service Platform, VIP were searched by computer, and meta-analysis was performed by
RevMan5.4 software. The statistical effect size of the count data was expressed as an OR value and
95% CI.
Results: A total of 17 literatures were included, and 13321 elderly patients had significant differences in
gender, age, education level, health status, living alone, pain, chronic disease, economic stress, IADL,
depression and other aspects (P < 0.05).Nursing measures based on cognitive-belief-behavior model
can be used to intervene in advance.

Conclusion: Based on this study, health care providers need to focus on elderly people, those with low
income, low education, disabilities in daily living, pain, chronic diseases, low mood, and living alone
or empty-nest. It also provides personalized and targeted interventions to effectively prevent or slow
down the occurrence and development of self-neglect in the elderly.
