Palliative Care Needs Among Older Chronic Non-communicable Disease
Patients in Indonesian Rural Areas

Background: Chronically non communicable diseases (CNCDs) have become a global and priority public
health-related issue. The CNCDs are the disease with long duration and period, and generally slow of course
progression. Chronic condition with comorbidities is highly increased especially in aging population, and older
population is widely spread throughout the country with various numbers. There is an inconsistent provision of
palliative care across Indonesia. Investigation of palliative care needs among the older people with chronic
disease is essential.
Objective: this study aims to identify the characteristic and palliative care needs among older patients
with chronic diseases in primary health care settings.
Oral Presentation Abstracts
Methods: This study is a cross-sectional method. The participant recruited by applying purposive sampling
method. The inclusion criteria are age 55 years old and above, have a chronic disease, and agree being a
participant. The exclusion criteria are have communicable disease, have communication barriers, and have
dementia. The questionnaires used sociodemographic form and SPICT (Supportive and Palliative Care Indicator
Tool). A descriptive analysis was performed using absolute frequencies and percentage.
Results: There are 244 participants. The study conducted from August to December 2022 in two PHCs.
The majority of respondents were female (52%), age of group in older (51.6%), primary diagnose with
chronic hypertension (58.2%), and have comorbidities (63.9%). There are 34.4% out of respondents needs
palliative care. Predominantly respondents reported that have more dependence to others (71 persons),
have symptoms persistence (67 persons), unplanned to admit the emergency department during last
6 months (60 persons), caregiver needs help and support (39 persons), poor performance status
(36 persons), and extremely weight loss (15 persons).
Conclusion: there is significant number of older patients who live with chronic disease are need palliative
care services. Provision palliative care in primary health care setting is being demanding since the aging
population increased.
