           Thailand

Background: Thailand has fully embraced an aging society, increasing age correlates with a rise in
dependency. Thus, Caregivers (CGs) play a crucial role in continuously caring for the elderly at home
alongside families. CGs must passess the knowledge and skills to manage various situations, assisting
with daily tasks, providing psychological support, and managing their own stress levels.

Objective: The study aims to explore the expectations, attitudes, and barriers encountered by CGs in
caring for housebound or bedridden elderly at home.

Methods: This qualitative study used semistructured interviews to explore CGs’ perspectives on providing
care for housebound or bedridden elderly at home. Participants were selected using purposive sampling
from CGs with experiences in-person home visits in urban area, Chiang Mai Province, January-March 2024.
Semistructured interviews were conducted, audio recorded with participant consent and transcribed
verbatim. The structured approach was used to analyze and organize data.

Results: The study included 16 CGs (an average age of 54.0 years), the average age of the elderly they
care for is 60.48. After the training 70 hours, deficiencies were found in reviewing knowledge and skills in
caring for bedridden elderly; on ET tube, oxygen, urinary catheters, suctioning, tube feeding, etc. They lack of
confidence in providing complex care for the elderly, and a lack of system for recording data on caring for
bedridden elderly. They express a need for development of their capabilities that they have not previously
encountered. They also expect to promote of having more volunteer CGs in the future.

                                                                                                                      Poster Presentation Abstracts
Conclusion: CGs have positive attitude and high expectations for providing care services. However, there
is a need to develop additional knowledge and skills to provide appropriate care for the elderly. Thus, it is
important to enhance the skills of CGs and health care teams to overcome barriers and optimize the use of.
