Background: China’s General Administration of Sport is calling for high-level athletes to join university
sports education after they retire. At present, China’s higher nursing education is accelerating
progress, and physical education is particularly important for the physical health and mental health of
nursing students. Physical education resources in nursing schools are relatively scarce, and students’
interest in physical education courses needs to be improved. Therefore, it is necessary to construct
physical education courses suitable for nursing students according to their preferences.
Objective: To investigate the preference of nursing undergraduates to physical education courses
under the background of “high-level retired athletes entering universities” in China.
Methods: A questionnaire was designed based on a discrete choice experiment, and 356
undergraduate nursing students were investigated. In STATA 15.0 software, the data were statistically
analysed using a mixed logit model.
Results: All attributes (sports coach, sports type, group size, course feedback and assessment
content) in our study were found to have a significant influence on undergraduate nursing students’
preferences for physical education courses.
Conclusion: The preference of nursing undergraduates for physical education courses is affected
by sports coach, sports type, group size, course feedback and assessment content. Under the

background of “high-level retired athletes entering colleges and universities” in China, nursing
educators should make reference to the preferences of nursing students and formulate physical
education courses that meet the needs of the group, so as to provide guarantee for students’ physical
quality and long-term career development.
