Background: With the development of intensive care and diagnostic techniques, the number of ICU
survivors are increasing, but after ICU or transfer, a series of psychological, cognitive, and physiological
disorders will appear, called post intensive care syndrome (PICS), resulting in a decrease in patient
health-related quality of life, increasing healthcare utilization and costs, limiting ability to perform daily
activities, re-admission, or death. As the most direct and frequent contacts and caregivers of ICU patients,
ICU nurses play an important roles in PICS prevention.

Objective: To investigate the cognitive level of post intensive care syndrome among EICU nurses and
the status of implementation of preventive strategies and influencing factors in a tertiary hospital in
GuiZhou province, China, so as to provide theoretical basis to construct a theoretical training program
for EICU nurses to increase their PICS behavior in clinical practice.

Methods: 15EICU nurses were interviewed by semi-structured method using phenomenology in
qualitative research. Content analysis method was adopted to analyze, encode, collect, extract the
           themes and verify the data.

           Results: Four subjects were identified from the interview: EICU nurses’ cognition level of PICS;
prevention strategies of PICS; factors affecting the implementation of PICS prevention; EICU nurses
demand and application of PICS knowledge.

Conclusion: The cognition of PICS among EICU nurses is at a low level, the factors that affect the
implementation of PICS prevention among EICU nurses mainly include the shortage of Human Resources,
                                                                                                                      Poster Presentation Abstracts
busy work schedules, EICU environments, lack of norms and standards, poor communication between
nurses and doctors. In order to improve the cognition level of EICU nurses on PICS and the prevention of
PICS, it is necessary to develop relevant training programs to strengthen the prevention knowledge of PICS
among EICU nurses, so as to effectively carry out PICS prevention in clinical practice and improve the quality
           of life of ICU patients.
