Abstract:
Worldwide, at least 44 million people are living with dementia, making this condition a global health
crisis that must be addressed. In Japan, older people are defined as being over 65 years. According
to a survey by the Cabinet Office, there are about 35.89 million older people in Japan, accounting
for 28.4% of the total population1. As the population aging progresses, the number of people with
dementia will also increase. A study on Future Projections of the Elderly Population with Dementia in
Japan estimates that the number of older people with dementia will reach approximately 6.75 million
by 2025, a prevalence of 18.5% (1 in 5.4 people). Progress in health outcomes for this large population
cannot be made unless health disciplines and others in society collaborate to find causation,
better treatment and care, and hopefully curative approaches in the future. To this end, the
Alzheimer’s Association International Conference will be held in the United States this year to consider
care for older people with dementia and their families. At this academic conference, we will
disseminate cutting-edge dementia nursing practices in Japan and lead discussions on the issues
and developments of future academic research.
