Background: Hypertension is one of the leading risk factors for mortality and disability in the world.
In China, the incidence of hypertension indicated a younger trend. Middle-aged people have their own
unique physical, pathological and social attributes. They usually play multiple roles in their families and
society and, have limited time to concern about their health. As a result, middle-aged people may face
more challenges to manage their hypertension. Effective management of hypertension in middle-aged
people can reduce or slow down the deterioration of the disease, avoid serious cardiovascular events and
other complications, prolong life expectancy, thereby improving the health of patients and reducing the
burden of disease on families and society. China has its unique cultural beliefs and practices based on
Confucianism and Taoism. Along with China’s social reform and economic growth, great changes have
taken place in people’s lifestyle, economic conditions, social environment, and healthcare system. But little
is known about what sociocultural factors and how these factors influence management of hypertension
among middle-aged people. Understanding how middle-aged people manage their hypertension and
how contextual factors influence their management of hypertension will help nurse practitioners and other
health care providers design more appropriate programs to achieve sustainable and optimal outcomes in
hypertension control.
Objective: The aim of this study is to understand management of hypertension among middle-aged
people in Chinese context.
Methods: An ethnography study was designed for this study. Photovoice and in-depth interview were
used as data collection methods to understand management of hypertension among middle-aged
people within the context of China.
Poster Presentation Abstracts
Results: The data are in the process of thematic analysis.
Conclusion: The information gained from this study will be expected to pave the way of developing
effective and tailored health educational and interventional programs that is suitable for Chinese
culture and accepted by middle-aged people living with hypertension.
Keywords: Chinese middle-aged people, ethnography, management of hypertension
