Background: With the digitization of healthcare, it is important to ensure that chronic disease patients
can effectively adapt to electronic health functions and devices. The level of digital health literacy of
patients was the most critical influencing factor.
Objective: This study aimed to summarize the content, characteristics, and limitations of electronic
health literacy assessment tools.
Methods: We systematically searched multiple databases (Pubmed, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane
Center Register of Controlled Trials, Wanfang Data, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and VIP
Database) from inception to March 2024 to identify studies focused on electronic health literacy
assessment tools. Two reviewers independently examined abstracts and the full text for eligibility.
Results: A total of 2,103 references were screened, of which 46 articles were included in this study
(9 English literature and 37 Chinese dissertations). Most research tools focused on measuring
patients’ electronic health literacy level and measuring patients’ attitudes toward using the Internet.
The eHealth literacy scale was the most commonly used tool.
Conclusion: Electronic health literacy played an important role in the health behavior and
self-management of chronic disease patients. However, the development of electronic health literacy
assessment tools based on a certain network background had some limitations of the times, and there

was a lack of specific assessment tools for electronic health literacy of chronic disease populations. Future
studies should develop measurement tools that keep up with the times and combine relevant diseases to
develop electronic health literacy tools for measuring chronic diseases.
