Abstract:
The healthcare industry is currently experiencing a paradigm shift in the education of nursing
professionals, with the integration of high technology and humanity taking center stage. This shift is
primarily driven by the rapid advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other digital innovations,
which have transformed the way nursing professionals deliver care and interact with their patients.
The need to prepare nursing professionals to embrace high technology while maintaining a strong
sense of humanity has become increasingly important to ensure a well-rounded and competent
nursing workforce. This presentation explores the paradigm shift in educating nursing professionals in
the era of AI, focusing on the integration of high technology and humanity, the response of the
University of Hong Kong School of Nursing (HKU Nursing) to this shift, and the changing landscape of
nursing research, with an increased emphasis on qualitative data.
In the era of AI, the integration of high technology and humanity is essential for nursing professionals to
provide high-quality, patient-centered care. The utilization of AI-powered tools, wearable devices, and
telemedicine platforms has allowed nursing professionals to enhance their ability to assess, diagnose,
and monitor patients more accurately. Simultaneously, the importance of humanity in nursing care
cannot be overlooked, as it plays a crucial role in building trust, empathy, and compassion between
nursing professionals and their patients. Therefore, the shift in nursing education must emphasize the
development of both technological proficiency and strong interpersonal skills.
To prepare nursing professionals to embrace high technology and humanity simultaneously,
educational institutions like HKU Nursing are adapting their curricula and teaching methodologies.
The incorporation of simulation-based training, virtual reality, and AI-powered learning tools in the
classroom allows students to develop their technical skills, while interactive case studies, group
discussions, and reflective exercises help nurture the human aspects of nursing care. By combining
these approaches, HKU Nursing aims to produce nursing professionals who are proficient in
technology and possess a deep understanding of the importance of human connection in patient
care.
