Abstract
A new concept of health promotion has been implemented in hospitals in order to promote peoples health. This study aimed to explore how the health promoting hospital policy was implemented and to study the process and outcomes of implementation of health promoting hospital policies. The participants included a hospital director, ten committee members, 87 hospital personnel, and 428 other people and clients. The instruments used were an interview guide for in-depth interviewing, focus group discussions and the Health Promoting Behavior Questionnaire (HPB) developed by the researcher. Qualitative data were content analyzed and quantitative data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation.
The result of the study indicated that :
1.Implementation of the health promoting policy. The executive committee of the hospital formulated policy which was then was circulated to all hospital personnel. Personnel were introduced to health promotion concepts and their awareness was raised to help them to commit to working with it.
2.The process of implementing health promoting hospital. The Ottawa Charter for health promotion and the standard of health promoting hospitals were used as guidelines and the policies were integrated into routine work. The hospital administrator and hospital personnel were committed to their work, worked well as a team and learned from each other.
3.The outcome of implementing the health promoting hospital. It was found that the scores of health promoting behaviors(HPB)of the hospital personnel were at high level in five aspects except the physical activity subscale was at moderate level. Regarding the HPB other people, it was found that the scores of the nutrition subscale and the interpersonal relationship subscale were at a high level, whereas, the scores of the subscales for health responsibility, physical activity, stress management and spiritual growth were at moderate levels, and the HPB of the clients were at a moderate level in all aspects.
It is recommended that hospital administrators should support health promoting behavior of hospital personnel and physical activity in particular. There should be a campaign to promote the health of clients and other people, and networking should be established with other organizations both within and outside of, the community.
